About the role
This interview covers the daily work of operating a water treatment plant, from monitoring treatment stages to testing water and responding to abnormal readings. The panel wants sound process knowledge, respect for chemical and machinery hazards, and clear shift records. Entry-level candidates should show that they follow procedures and ask for help when a condition is outside their authority.
How to prepare
- Review coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, filtration and disinfection and the purpose of each stage.
- Practise explaining how you would check an unusual pH, turbidity, flow or dosing result before making an adjustment.
- Revise safe chemical handling, protective equipment, spill response and equipment isolation.
- Prepare an example of following a procedure carefully during laboratory, plant or practical work.
- Think through what a useful shift log and handover should contain.
Common mistakes
- Changing a chemical dose without confirming the reading and following the operating procedure.
- Treating unusual smells, leaks or vibration as minor because the plant is still running.
- Describing treatment stages without explaining what each one removes or controls.
- Leaving vague records that do not help the next shift understand what happened.
