About this interview
A US student visa (F-1) interview is a short conversation with a consular officer who decides whether you are a genuine student with the funds to study and clear plans after your course. Expect to explain your study plans, how your education will be paid for, why you chose your school and what connects you to home.
How to prepare
- Know your school, course, start date and why this programme suits your goals, in your own words.
- Understand exactly who is paying for your studies and how, and be ready to explain it simply.
- Practise short, direct answers, since the officer has little time for each applicant.
- Be honest about your plans after study and your connections at home, and never rehearse a story that is not true.
- Arrive at the embassy early with your documents in order, allowing for Lagos traffic.
Common mistakes
- Reciting memorised answers that sound scripted or do not match your documents.
- Being unable to explain your funding or who your sponsor is.
- Giving long answers when a short, clear one is what the officer needs.
