About this interview
A US visitor visa (B1/B2) interview is a short meeting with a consular officer who decides whether your trip is for business or tourism and whether you will return home afterwards. Expect to explain the purpose and length of your trip, who is paying, where you have been before and what you are coming back to.
How to prepare
- Be clear and specific about why you are travelling, where you will stay and for how long.
- Know how the trip is funded and be able to explain it in a sentence or two.
- Answer honestly about your job, studies or business and your plans on return.
- Keep your answers short and consistent with your DS-160 form.
Common mistakes
- Giving vague answers about the purpose of the trip.
- Pushing documents at the officer instead of answering what was asked.
- Saying things that do not match what you wrote on your application.
