About the programme
A teacher training programme interview checks whether you have the motivation, subject knowledge and patience to grow into a good classroom teacher. The panel looks at how clearly you explain ideas, how you would keep a class of mixed learners on task, and whether you reflect honestly on your own lessons.
How to prepare
- Pick one topic from your subject and practise explaining it simply in under three minutes, as if to a class.
- Recall a real moment when you taught or tutored someone, including what went wrong and what you changed.
- Think through how you would settle a noisy or disengaged class without shouting or punishment.
- Refresh the core content of your subject at the level you plan to teach, especially areas you find hard.
- Be clear about why teaching and not another career, with a reason rooted in your own experience.
Common mistakes
- Saying you want to teach because other jobs are scarce, which suggests you will leave at the first chance.
- Explaining a topic in jargon instead of breaking it into small, clear steps.
- Describing past lessons as perfect, which shows you do not reflect on your own practice.
