About the role
This interview tests your working knowledge of transformers, switchgear, busbars, control systems and substation auxiliaries. The panel will look closely at switching discipline, commissioning evidence, fault diagnosis and your ability to coordinate maintenance or upgrade work safely.
How to prepare
- Review the purpose and failure indicators of transformers, breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers and substation batteries.
- Practise explaining a switching programme, including checks, communications and safety boundaries.
- Prepare a commissioning example that covers primary plant, secondary circuits, protection and SCADA points.
- Revise how you diagnose breaker control, direct-current supply and interlocking problems.
- Think through how you manage drawing discrepancies and site changes during an outage.
Common mistakes
- Describing switching from memory without independent checks and clear confirmation points.
- Focusing on primary equipment while overlooking direct-current supplies, interlocks and secondary circuits.
- Treating energisation as the first full test of protection or SCADA interfaces.
- Allowing schedule pressure to bypass drawing control or safe access boundaries.
