About the role
This is a technical interview on protection philosophy, relay coordination, scheme testing and fault investigation. The panel is looking for selective protection decisions, disciplined commissioning and accurate control of settings, drawings and evidence.
How to prepare
- Revise overcurrent, earth-fault, differential, distance and breaker-failure protection principles.
- Practise explaining coordination choices with current transformers, grading margins and fault levels.
- Prepare a disturbance example using relay targets, oscillography, sequence of events and breaker indications.
- Review secondary injection, trip-circuit proving and end-to-end testing methods.
- Think through how you control setting revisions and discrepancies between drawings and field wiring.
Common mistakes
- Giving relay setting values without explaining the system data and coordination behind them.
- Treating a successful relay injection as proof that the full trip circuit works.
- Blaming relay failure before checking event records, wiring, breaker status and protection zones.
- Making an undocumented settings change because restoration is urgent.
