About the role
This interview focuses on the engineering behind repeatable food production, from raw material variation and heat transfer to hygiene, yield and scale-up. The panel wants an engineer who can protect consumers, quantify losses and turn trials into operating controls that production teams can use.
How to prepare
- Review a food process you know well and identify its critical inputs, transformations, limits and failure modes.
- Prepare a yield or capacity investigation that used material balances and production data.
- Think through hygienic design, allergen changeover and cleaning access in equipment modifications.
- Choose a scale-up example where laboratory or pilot results did not transfer directly to the line.
- Practise explaining a technical process limit to both operators and commercial stakeholders.
Common mistakes
- Discussing output gains without considering food safety, shelf stability or cleaning requirements.
- Assuming raw material inputs are constant when their variation is central to the process problem.
- Reporting a successful trial without explaining scale-up risks and the final control plan.
