About the role
This interview tests whether you can originate and deliver investigations that are accurate, fair and worth the risk involved. The panel will look closely at how you verify evidence, protect sources, challenge your own assumptions and make difficult publication decisions.
How to prepare
- Choose two investigations and map the lead, reporting steps, evidence, obstacles and final impact.
- Review how you authenticate documents, digital material and claims from confidential sources.
- Prepare an example of changing or dropping a promising angle when the evidence did not support it.
- Think through how you offer a meaningful right of reply without exposing a source.
- Practise explaining a complex investigation in a short, clear spoken summary.
Common mistakes
- Treating one confidential source as proof of a serious allegation.
- Describing secrecy as source protection without explaining practical safeguards.
- Focusing on the drama of an investigation instead of the evidence and public interest.
- Claiming impact that cannot be separated from the work of other reporters.
