About the role
A reporter finds stories, gathers facts from reliable sources, checks them and writes clearly to deadline. The panel is deciding whether you have good news judgement, verify before you publish, treat sources fairly and can turn a complicated issue into a story ordinary readers understand.
How to prepare
- Read the outlet's recent coverage and be ready to talk about stories you liked and gaps you see.
- Prepare two or three story ideas you could pitch, each with a clear angle and possible sources.
- Think of a time you checked a claim before using it and how you did it.
- Review the basic ethics of reporting, including fairness, accuracy and protecting sources.
- Practise summarising a news event in a few clear sentences.
Common mistakes
- Pitching topics instead of stories with a clear angle.
- Not knowing the outlet's audience or recent coverage.
- Treating verification as slow when it protects you and the outlet.
