About the role
An investigative journalist follows difficult questions beyond daily reporting and builds conclusions from evidence that can withstand scrutiny. The panel will assess how you plan an inquiry, verify documents and testimony, protect sources, offer a fair right of reply and recognise when a story is not ready.
How to prepare
- Map one previous investigation from the first lead through verification, response and publication.
- Review methods for checking document provenance, metadata, public records and source independence.
- Prepare to explain how you assess risk and agree safe communication with a confidential source.
- Practise separating what the evidence proves from reasonable inference and unanswered questions.
- Think through how you would respond if a key claim weakened shortly before publication.
Common mistakes
- Treating repeated allegations as corroboration when the sources may share the same origin.
- Promising a source absolute protection when important limits still apply.
- Approaching the subject so late that a meaningful response is impossible.
- Falling in love with the original theory after contrary evidence appears.
