About the award
A research grant interview helps a funding panel decide which projects deserve support. They look at why the question matters, whether the methods are sound, whether the plan and budget are realistic, whether your team has the right skills, and how the findings will reach the people who can use them.
How to prepare
- Practise explaining the significance of your work in plain words for panel members outside your field.
- Know every line of your budget and why each cost is needed.
- Prepare a clear plan for sharing results with decision makers, communities or industry.
- Be ready to explain each team member's role and relevant experience.
- Think through the main risks to data collection and your backup plan.
Common mistakes
- Padding the budget with costs you cannot justify.
- Talking about methods in detail but never explaining why the work matters.
- Having no plan for what happens to findings after the project ends.
