About the role
A reinsurance analyst helps an insurer understand what risk it keeps, what it transfers and what can be recovered after a loss. The interview tests your grasp of treaty and facultative arrangements, your control of exposure data and your ability to coordinate accurate placements and recoveries.
How to prepare
- Revise quota share, surplus, excess of loss and facultative structures and when each is useful.
- Practise calculating retention, layer attachment, limits, reinstatements and recoverable amounts from simple scenarios.
- Prepare an example of finding and correcting an error in exposure, premium or claims data.
- Review how you build and reconcile bordereaux and track outstanding balances.
- Be ready to explain technical treaty terms to an underwriter or finance colleague in plain language.
Common mistakes
- Describing reinsurance structures without showing how they change retained loss.
- Trusting a spreadsheet without reconciling totals or investigating missing fields.
- Ignoring wording, exclusions or notification requirements when discussing recoveries.
- Treating placement as only a pricing exercise and overlooking data quality and documentation.
