About the role
This interview tests whether you can maintain mechanical plant without creating a new fault or safety risk. The panel will listen for a logical approach to pumps, bearings, seals, valves and basic rotating equipment, along with sound isolation and handover habits.
How to prepare
- Revise the purpose and common failure signs of pumps, bearings, seals, couplings and valves.
- Practise describing a fault-finding sequence from the first symptom to a confirmed cause.
- Review isolation, stored energy, permit to work and post-maintenance testing.
- Prepare an example of a mechanical task from training, an apprenticeship or early work experience.
- Review how alignment, lubrication and poor installation can shorten equipment life.
Common mistakes
- Starting repairs before confirming isolation and the permit conditions.
- Replacing a part without explaining how you would confirm the root cause.
- Claiming experience with equipment you have only seen in a classroom.
- Forgetting inspection, testing and housekeeping before returning equipment to service.
