About the audition
This audition tests whether a keyboardist can support a live band rather than simply play a strong solo part. The musical director will listen for steady time, useful voicings, appropriate sounds, quick responses to cues and careful preparation of the set.
How to prepare
- Practise the audition songs in their stated keys and in at least one alternative key.
- Build simple piano, electric piano, organ and pad sounds that you can select quickly.
- Rehearse playing around a vocalist and guitar without crowding the middle register.
- Mark every intro, ending, medley link and cue on a clean set list.
- Plan a basic backup if a pedal, cable or saved patch fails.
Common mistakes
- Playing dense voicings that compete with the singer or guitarist.
- Changing patches late and missing the first beat of a section.
- Showing off during parts that require steady accompaniment.
- Depending on one saved setup without a workable fallback.
