About the audition
An a cappella ensemble audition tests how well you sing when every note, beat and chord depends on the voices in the group. The director wants accurate pitch, secure harmony, a flexible blend, rhythmic confidence and close attention to the singers around you.
How to prepare
- Practise holding your part while another recording or singer carries the melody.
- Use a tuning reference only at the start, then check whether you finish in the same key.
- Rehearse matched vowels, consonants and cut-offs across different dynamics.
- Clap difficult rhythms before adding the words and pitches.
- Prepare a short unaccompanied piece that shows tone and musical phrasing.
Common mistakes
- Following the lead melody and abandoning your own harmony line.
- Singing louder when careful tuning and vowel matching would solve the chord.
- Relying on a piano to maintain pitch throughout an unaccompanied section.
- Watching the page so closely that you miss the director's cue.
