About the audition
This audition assesses percussion technique while you stand or move as part of a marching ensemble. The panel will look for clean rudiments, dependable tempo, accurate reading, coordinated movement and the ability to match the section's sound and visual style.
How to prepare
- Practise the required rudiments slowly before increasing to performance tempo.
- Use a metronome while marking time so your feet and hands share one pulse.
- Rehearse difficult bars in short loops, then place them back into the complete exercise.
- Check posture and stick heights in a mirror or with feedback from another player.
- Build endurance gradually and follow safe warm-up and rest habits.
Common mistakes
- Playing beyond a controlled tempo and allowing rudiments to become uneven.
- Looking down continuously and missing visual cues or spacing changes.
- Using extra force to create volume instead of an efficient stroke.
- Stopping after a small error instead of returning cleanly to the pulse.
