About the role

This interview covers the junior work behind dependable protection and control systems. The panel wants electrical fundamentals, careful use of schematics and test evidence, and a safe approach to relay settings, trip circuits and commissioning records.

How to prepare

  1. Review overcurrent, earth-fault, differential and distance protection at a level appropriate to the vacancy.
  2. Practise explaining selectivity, sensitivity, speed and reliability with a simple network example.
  3. Revise current transformers, voltage transformers, circuit-breaker trip coils and DC control supplies.
  4. Study how event records, disturbance records and relay indications support a fault investigation.
  5. Prepare one example of reading a control schematic or testing an electrical circuit.

Common mistakes

  • Naming relay functions without explaining what quantity they measure or what they should trip.
  • Changing a setting to make a test pass without an approved instruction.
  • Ignoring DC supply, wiring or instrument-transformer issues when investigating a protection operation.
  • Recording only a pass or fail result without the test conditions and measured values.
