About the role
This interview tests whether a civil engineering graduate can connect classroom knowledge to building design and site work. The panel is looking for sound fundamentals, careful use of drawings, respect for review procedures and the judgement to raise quality or safety concerns early.
How to prepare
- Review basic foundation selection, reinforced concrete behaviour, drainage and common building loads.
- Practise explaining one design calculation from assumptions through units, checks and conclusion.
- Revise how architectural, structural and services drawings relate to one another.
- Prepare examples from coursework, industrial training or volunteering that show your exact contribution.
- Think through how you would report a drawing conflict or failed quality test without exceeding your authority.
Common mistakes
- Claiming sole credit for a group project without separating your contribution.
- Choosing a technical solution before stating the ground, loading and design information needed.
- Treating drawing conflicts or poor test results as matters to resolve informally on site.
- Giving calculations without units, assumptions or an independent reasonableness check.
