About the role
A graduate geotechnical engineer supports ground investigation, testing, interpretation and foundation advice. The panel is looking for solid soil mechanics, disciplined records, respect for uncertainty and an ability to explain how unexpected ground or groundwater conditions affect a project.
How to prepare
- Review soil classification, effective stress, consolidation, shear strength, bearing capacity and slope stability basics.
- Practise reading a borehole log and connecting each observation to a possible design risk.
- Prepare to explain how sampling disturbance and laboratory quality affect conclusions.
- Choose a geotechnical project and describe what the evidence supported and what remained uncertain.
- Revise field hazards around plant, excavations, buried services and unstable ground.
Common mistakes
- Treating one borehole as a complete picture of the whole site.
- Discarding an unusual result without checking the sample, method and surrounding evidence.
- Giving a firm foundation recommendation while hiding uncertainty or missing groundwater information.
- Describing investigation work without mentioning sample identification and chain of records.
