About the role
This interview covers road design decisions and the field judgement needed to deliver them. The panel is looking for a civil engineer who can connect alignment, pavement, drainage and earthworks, interpret quality results and coordinate changes without losing control of safety or records.
How to prepare
- Review one road alignment and explain the constraints that shaped its horizontal and vertical geometry.
- Prepare to discuss pavement inputs, drainage catchments and how ground information affected your design.
- Choose a failed field test and explain how you investigated and closed it out.
- Think through interfaces with utilities, access routes, traffic and nearby properties.
- Practise describing how you record design changes and communicate them to the site team.
Common mistakes
- Discussing alignment design without considering sight distance, drainage or land constraints.
- Allowing construction to continue after failed tests without a documented disposition.
- Treating drainage as an isolated detail instead of following water through the whole system.
- Giving a site solution without confirming levels, utilities and downstream consequences.
