About the role
This interview covers leadership of the plant engineering and maintenance function, including reliability, shutdowns, capital work, safety and technical capability. The panel is looking for evidence that you can protect asset health while meeting production needs and controlling cost. Strong answers connect engineering decisions to risk, output and the development of the maintenance team.
How to prepare
- Map a maintenance strategy from asset criticality through work identification, planning, scheduling, execution and review.
- Prepare a shutdown example that shows how you controlled scope, safety, contractors and handover.
- Choose a capital proposal and explain the operational risk, lifecycle cost and expected benefit behind it.
- Review the maintenance measures you use and how you detect misleading compliance or backlog figures.
- Prepare an example of developing supervisors, planners or technicians across different disciplines.
Common mistakes
- Treating planned maintenance completion as proof that equipment is becoming more reliable.
- Describing technical fixes without explaining production risk, cost or safe execution.
- Taking every urgent request at face value instead of using equipment criticality and evidence.
- Talking about the team only as labour capacity rather than people who need standards and development.
