About the role
This practice covers the management of live distribution operations, including switching, feeder constraints, faults and customer restoration. The panel will look for firm safety controls, good network judgement and leadership that connects the control room, field crews, maintenance teams and customer communication.
How to prepare
- Review switching principles, operational boundaries, tagging, earthing and the checks required before field work starts.
- Practise explaining how you would sectionalise a fault and restore healthy sections without creating a new overload.
- Prepare an example of using feeder or outage data to reduce a repeated network problem.
- Think through how control-room records, field confirmation and customer updates should stay aligned during a major event.
- Prepare a case where you corrected an unsafe shortcut or inconsistent operating practice.
Common mistakes
- Restoring supply quickly without confirming equipment condition and crew safety.
- Assuming every healthy feeder has capacity to accept transferred load.
- Using interruption data without checking protection operations, weather, loading and field evidence.
- Giving customers firm restoration times before the fault scope is understood.
