About the role
This interview tests whether you can run generating units safely, respond calmly to abnormal conditions and make decisions from alarms and process trends. The panel will also look for disciplined communication with maintenance teams, field operators and the grid controller.
How to prepare
- Review the normal sequence for unit start-up, synchronisation, loading and shutdown.
- Prepare an example of diagnosing an abnormal plant condition from alarms and trends.
- Revise permit controls, equipment isolation, shift handover and return-to-service checks.
- Be ready to explain how you monitor efficiency without compromising equipment limits.
- Practise describing a plant trip in a clear timeline from first indication to recovery review.
Common mistakes
- Reciting a start-up sequence without explaining the checks that allow each step to proceed.
- Treating every alarm as an immediate trip without considering severity, protection and operating limits.
- Describing maintenance handback without confirming isolations and equipment status.
