About the role
An electrician installs, tests and repairs wiring and electrical equipment in homes, offices or industrial sites. The interviewer is deciding whether you work safely, find faults methodically, follow the standards, and treat customers and their property with respect while you work.
How to prepare
- Be ready to walk through how you safely isolate a circuit before you start work.
- Think of a tricky fault you traced and explain the steps you took to find it.
- Review the wiring standards and regulations that apply to the work the company does.
- Prepare to talk about installations involving generators, inverters or changeover switches, which are common jobs.
- Think about how you explain a problem and its cost to a customer who knows nothing about electricity.
Common mistakes
- Describing shortcuts as a sign of experience, when they signal a safety risk.
- Explaining fault finding as guesswork instead of a clear step-by-step process.
- Forgetting the customer side of the job, such as tidying up and explaining the work.
