About the role
This interview examines how you design and control blasts that are safe, compliant and useful to the mining process. The panel is looking for practical command of drilling quality, charging decisions, exclusion controls and performance analysis. You should show how field observations lead to defensible changes in later designs.
How to prepare
- Revise the relationship between geology, burden, spacing, stemming, charge distribution and timing.
- Prepare an example of diagnosing poor fragmentation, excessive movement or difficult digging.
- Review pre-blast checks, clearance communications and the safe response to suspected misfires.
- Practise explaining how wet, deviated, blocked or out-of-tolerance holes affect charging decisions.
- Think through how blast performance affects loading, hauling, crushing and overall cost.
Common mistakes
- Changing powder factor without considering geology, confinement, timing and hole quality.
- Treating a suspected misfire as a production delay instead of a controlled safety event.
- Judging a blast only by visible fragmentation and ignoring downstream performance.
- Claiming cost savings that merely move cost to loading, hauling or crushing.
