About the role
This interview tests whether you can understand a processing circuit as a connected system rather than a set of isolated machines. The panel will look for reliable metallurgical accounting, structured troubleshooting and safe control of plant changes. Good answers connect ore variability and operating conditions to throughput, recovery, product quality and losses.
How to prepare
- Review the major unit operations in the relevant commodity circuit and the variables that control them.
- Practise building and checking a mass balance from plant measurements and assays.
- Prepare an example of a bottleneck or recovery loss you investigated using operating data and sampling.
- Revise how you design a controlled plant trial and decide whether a change should be retained.
- Think through safe shutdown and restart decisions after power, water or equipment interruptions.
Common mistakes
- Recommending set-point changes before confirming that measurements and samples are reliable.
- Treating recovery, grade and throughput as independent targets with no trade-offs.
- Running an uncontrolled plant trial that cannot separate the effect of the change from ore variability.
- Ignoring safe isolation, stored energy or chemical hazards during troubleshooting.
