About the role
A copywriting intern develops words for adverts, social posts, scripts and other campaign materials under a creative team's guidance. The interview looks for clear thinking, an ear for language and the willingness to generate and revise many options. A small self-initiated portfolio can demonstrate potential when you have little commercial experience.
How to prepare
- Create sample headlines, captions and short scripts for a few different products and audiences.
- Practise explaining how each line answers the brief rather than saying only that it sounds good.
- Edit old writing for shorter sentences, stronger verbs and a clearer call to action.
- Study how tone changes across serious, playful, premium and everyday brands.
- Prepare an example of receiving feedback and producing a better second draft.
Common mistakes
- Choosing puns or fashionable phrases that obscure the message.
- Presenting only one idea when the brief calls for exploration.
- Ignoring spelling, punctuation, product facts or the required format.
- Defending every first draft instead of showing how you edit.
