About the role
This graduate interview tests how you apply civil engineering fundamentals on public works sites. The panel is looking for careful observation, safety awareness, accurate records and the judgement to raise questions rather than approve work beyond your authority.
How to prepare
- Revise drainage, concrete, reinforcement, setting out and basic measurement principles used on site.
- Practise reading a drawing and identifying the dimensions, specification notes and checks needed before construction.
- Prepare an example from a project, placement or laboratory where you found and corrected a quality issue.
- Check the official COREN site for current professional registration information relevant to the role.
Common mistakes
- Guessing when a drawing or specification is unclear.
- Focusing on progress while overlooking safety and hold-point inspections.
- Claiming sole responsibility for work completed by a student or project team.
