About the role
A category management intern helps analyse which products a retailer should stock, how they perform and how they appear on the shelf. The interview tests structured analysis, shopper awareness and the ability to make a modest recommendation without overstating incomplete data.
How to prepare
- Review basic retail measures such as sales value, units, margin, rate of sale and availability.
- Practise comparing products in a spreadsheet and explaining the pattern in plain language.
- Visit two different store formats and note how the same category assortment and layout differ.
- Prepare an example of making a recommendation from incomplete information.
- Think about the trade-offs between range choice, shelf capacity and stock movement.
Common mistakes
- Recommending products from sales value alone while ignoring rate of sale and availability.
- Treating supplier preference as the same as shopper need.
- Hiding missing data instead of stating how it limits the conclusion.
