About the role
A broadcast engineering intern supports the systems that carry audio and video through studios, playout and transmission. The panel is looking for sound fundamentals, a safe and methodical approach to faults, clear technical communication and readiness to learn from experienced engineers.
How to prepare
- Draw simple audio and video signal paths from a studio source to broadcast output.
- Review connectors, mixers, microphones, monitors, routers, playout systems and basic internet protocol networking.
- Practise a step-by-step troubleshooting method that starts with power, connections and signal indicators.
- Prepare an example of a technical project where you tested, documented and corrected a fault.
- Review electrical safety and the limits of work an intern should attempt without supervision.
Common mistakes
- Changing several settings at once and losing track of what affected the fault.
- Opening or rewiring powered equipment without authorisation and safe isolation.
- Using technical terms without giving the production team a clear operational update.
