About the programme
An apprenticeship selection interview decides whether you are ready to learn a trade on the job, such as electrical work, plumbing, welding, mechanics or tailoring. The panel wants to see genuine interest in the work, a practical streak, and signs that you will turn up on time, follow safety rules and take instruction from a master.
How to prepare
- Be ready to explain why this trade in particular, with a real moment that sparked your interest.
- Think of times you fixed, built or repaired something with your hands, even at home or in a family shop.
- Learn the basic safety gear and habits for the trade so you can talk about them with confidence.
- Have proof of reliability in mind, such as a job or role you kept up for months without missing days.
- Plan your route and leave early, because arriving late to an apprenticeship interview sends the worst signal.
Common mistakes
- Saying you will take any trade going, which tells the panel you have no real interest in this one.
- Overstating skills you have not yet learned instead of showing you are keen to be taught.
- Treating safety as boring and giving vague answers about protective gear or rules on site.
