About this interview
This interview is for a volunteer who supports a young person through regular conversations, encouragement and practical goal setting. The panel will look closely at listening skills, consistency, appropriate boundaries and the ability to act on safeguarding concerns.
How to prepare
- Prepare examples of helping someone think through a goal without making the decision for them.
- Review the programme's safeguarding and contact rules before the interview if they are available.
- Practise explaining confidentiality without promising to keep a safety concern secret.
- Think about how you would plan reliable sessions around your existing commitments.
- Consider how to support a mentee whose experiences and interests differ from yours.
Common mistakes
- Treating mentoring as a chance to control the young person's choices.
- Promising secrecy when a safeguarding concern may need to be reported.
- Using personal contact channels outside the programme's rules.
- Taking on counselling or family responsibilities beyond the mentor role.
