About the role

A WASH assistant helps teams deliver safe water, sanitation and hygiene activities in communities or emergency settings. The panel is looking for practical awareness of public health risks, respectful community work, accurate site observations and safe conduct in the field.

How to prepare

  1. Review the basic links between unsafe water, poor sanitation, hygiene practices and disease prevention.
  2. Practise describing how you would inspect a water point or latrine and record what you find.
  3. Prepare an example of explaining a practical health message to a community group.
  4. Think through how you would report a fault or contamination concern without making promises you cannot keep.
  5. Review safe behaviour around tools, water systems, waste and active repair sites.

Common mistakes

  • Treating community sensitisation as a lecture instead of listening to practical barriers.
  • Guessing that water is safe without reporting concerns for proper assessment.
  • Describing a site problem vaguely instead of recording its location, condition and urgency.
