About the audition
A TV news anchor screen test combines prepared reading with live editorial decisions. The panel looks for clear and credible delivery, accurate handling of copy, controlled reactions to production cues and the judgement to question guests or correct developing information without becoming the story.
How to prepare
- Practise reading news copy at a measured pace while keeping your eyes and expression engaged.
- Mark scripts for pronunciation, emphasis, pauses and likely changes before you rehearse them.
- Follow current stories and separate confirmed facts from claims that still require checking.
- Rehearse recovering from a missing line, failed autocue or late change without filling time with speculation.
- Record practice reads to notice rushed endings, repeated gestures and distracting changes in tone.
Common mistakes
- Using the same dramatic tone for every story.
- Guessing at a pronunciation or fact instead of checking it.
- Continuing with outdated copy after a confirmed correction arrives.
- Focusing on the camera so intensely that your delivery sounds read rather than understood.
