About the role
A truck driver moves goods over long distances, checks the vehicle before each trip, secures the load and keeps the trip documents in order. The interviewer is deciding whether you drive safely for long hours, know how to handle breakdowns and checkpoints, and will deliver the cargo complete and on time.
How to prepare
- List the routes you have driven, the types of truck and the kinds of load you have carried.
- Be ready to walk through your pre-trip checks from tyres and brakes to lights and fluids.
- Think of a breakdown or road incident you handled and what you did to protect the load and other road users.
- Know which trip documents you carry and why each one matters at a checkpoint or delivery point.
- Prepare an honest answer about how you manage rest and fatigue on long journeys.
Common mistakes
- Brushing off questions about past accidents instead of explaining what happened and what you learnt.
- Not knowing how to secure a load properly, which is a major safety and cost risk.
- Talking about driving through the night without rest as if it shows commitment.
