About the role
A fleet manager keeps a company's vehicles running safely and cheaply. That means planning maintenance, controlling fuel use, managing drivers' safety and performance, keeping papers and permits current, and reporting on fleet costs. The panel is deciding whether you can cut waste and accidents without slowing the business down.
How to prepare
- Gather figures from your past fleets, such as vehicle count, uptime, fuel cost per kilometre and accident rates.
- Prepare a story about how you reduced fuel theft or waste and how you proved it worked.
- Be ready to explain how you plan preventive maintenance and decide when to replace a vehicle.
- Think about how you handle a driver with repeated incidents, fairly and with records.
- Review the permits, insurance and road documents a commercial fleet must keep current.
Common mistakes
- Talking about vehicles and forgetting that drivers are the biggest factor in safety and cost.
- Giving savings figures without explaining how you measured them.
- Overlooking compliance, when an expired permit can take a truck off the road.
