About the role
A treasury officer makes sure the business has the cash it needs, when it needs it, at the best cost. Day to day you forecast liquidity, place surplus funds in the money market, handle FX deals and manage bank relationships. The panel is checking your market knowledge, care with controls and calm under pressure.
How to prepare
- Walk through how you build a daily or weekly cash forecast and how you check it against actuals.
- Follow recent movements in naira rates, treasury bill yields and interbank rates so you can discuss them.
- Prepare an example of a placement or FX deal and how you chose the bank and rate.
- Be ready to explain the controls that stop one person from both making and approving a payment.
- Think through what you do when a large expected inflow does not arrive.
Common mistakes
- Chasing the highest rate without weighing counterparty risk and access to the funds.
- Being vague on segregation of duties and dealing limits.
- Having no view on the current FX and interest rate environment.
