About the role
This interview covers the assessment of development proposals and their effects on places and people. The panel will look for policy literacy, confident use of spatial evidence, fair consultation and recommendations that can withstand scrutiny.
How to prepare
- Review how you assess access, neighbouring uses, services and environmental constraints.
- Prepare an example of using GIS or a site visit to challenge incomplete application information.
- Practise writing a short recommendation that separates evidence from judgement.
- Think through how you would manage a consultation with strongly opposed groups.
- Check the official development plan and procedures relevant to the recruiting authority.
Common mistakes
- Treating public support or opposition as the only planning consideration.
- Relying on an applicant's map without checking site and spatial evidence.
- Writing vague conditions that cannot be interpreted or monitored.
- Presenting a personal preference as if it were planning policy.
