About the role
This interview covers the scrub and circulating responsibilities that keep surgery safe from admission to recovery handover. The panel is looking for disciplined checks, reliable sterile technique, accurate counts and the confidence to stop and clarify when something is wrong.
How to prepare
- Review preoperative identity, consent, site and equipment checks.
- Practise explaining how you set up, maintain and correct a sterile field.
- Refresh count procedures and the actions required when a count does not reconcile.
- Prepare examples of anticipating a surgical team's needs without skipping safety steps.
- Review safe specimen labelling, documentation and transfer.
Common mistakes
- Allowing time pressure or hierarchy to override a safety check.
- Saying you would correct contamination without explaining how the field is made safe.
- Treating instrument and swab counts as the scrub nurse's responsibility alone.
- Forgetting the chain of custody for surgical specimens.
