About the role

This interview focuses on caring for unstable patients who need close monitoring and organ support. The panel wants evidence that you can interpret trends, manage high-risk equipment and medicines, prevent infection and communicate changes without delay.

How to prepare

  1. Review systematic assessment of a deteriorating ventilated patient and the common causes of alarms.
  2. Refresh your checks for infusion pumps, vasoactive medicines, central lines and arterial lines.
  3. Prepare a case where an observation trend led you to intervene before a crisis.
  4. Revise aseptic care and daily review of invasive devices.
  5. Practise a concise intensive care handover that states support, risks and immediate priorities.

Common mistakes

  • Responding to a monitor or ventilator alarm without assessing the patient first.
  • Naming observations without interpreting their direction or clinical meaning.
  • Discussing infusions without independent checks, line tracing or response monitoring.
  • Giving a handover that lists tasks but misses current risks.
