About the role
This interview is for an entry-level technician who will inspect and maintain equipment in a substation under authorised procedures. The panel is assessing equipment knowledge, attention to condition, switching discipline and the confidence to stop and escalate unsafe or unclear work.
How to prepare
- Review the purpose of transformers, breakers, isolators, busbars, surge arresters and instrument transformers.
- Practise describing a substation inspection in a fixed, repeatable sequence.
- Revise isolation, proving dead, earthing, permit-to-work controls and safe approach distances.
- Prepare an example of finding a defect during practical training and reporting it accurately.
- Learn how equipment labels and single-line diagrams are used to confirm the correct work location.
Common mistakes
- Describing an isolator as equipment that should interrupt normal load current.
- Relying on memory instead of confirming equipment identity and the approved switching instruction.
- Entering a restricted area or touching equipment to investigate an unusual sound.
- Reporting a defect vaguely without its equipment tag, indication and observed condition.
