About the role
This interview tests whether you can install, inspect and troubleshoot electricity meters without putting people or property at risk. The panel will look for an orderly testing method, accurate field records and respectful communication with customers who may be worried about their supply or consumption.
How to prepare
- Review single-phase and three-phase meter connections, polarity and basic commissioning checks.
- Practise explaining how you isolate a circuit and prove it is safe before touching conductors.
- Revise common causes of a meter showing supply while the customer's circuits remain off.
- Prepare an example of careful electrical work you completed under supervision.
- Think through how you would explain consumption checks without blaming the customer or promising an adjustment.
Common mistakes
- Starting work before confirming isolation and testing for voltage.
- Calling a meter faulty without checking supply, wiring and the customer's load.
- Leaving incomplete records of readings, seals or commissioning tests.
- Arguing with a customer about consumption instead of explaining the investigation process.
