About the audition
This audition checks whether a singer can create accurate, repeatable backing parts in a recording session. The producer will listen for harmony, blend, clean microphone technique, fast learning and the discipline to follow detailed notes across several takes.
How to prepare
- Practise finding upper, lower and inner harmony lines from a melody and chord sequence.
- Record stacked parts and listen for mismatched vowels, consonants, timing and breath noise.
- Practise copying a short sung phrase after one or two listens.
- Learn how small changes in distance and angle affect your microphone sound.
- Rest your voice and arrive warmed up without tiring the upper range.
Common mistakes
- Singing like a soloist when the part needs a neutral blend.
- Guessing a harmony after losing it instead of asking to hear the reference again.
- Changing distance from the microphone between matching takes.
- Missing precise cut-offs because the lyric sheet is not marked.
