About the role
A store manager runs a shop as a small business: hitting sales targets, leading the team, controlling stock and keeping losses down. The panel is deciding whether you can turn a store's numbers around, keep staff motivated through busy seasons and handle the daily surprises of retail without losing control.
How to prepare
- Gather the key figures from your current or last store, such as sales growth, shrinkage and staff turnover.
- Prepare one clear story of a store or section you improved, with what you changed and what the numbers did.
- Walk through a few of the company's branches and note what you would fix in your first month.
- Be ready to explain how you plan rotas around peak periods, power cuts and staff who call in at short notice.
- Think through how you deal with a team member you suspect of theft, step by step and fairly.
Common mistakes
- Talking only about sales and ignoring stock control, shrinkage and the team behind the numbers.
- Blaming staff or head office for poor results instead of showing what you did about them.
- Giving figures you cannot explain when the panel asks how you got them.
