About the role
A retail store associate serves customers on the shop floor, keeps shelves stocked and tidy, and helps at the till when it gets busy. The interviewer wants to see that you are friendly, reliable with stock and money, and willing to stand for a long shift and still smile at the last customer.
How to prepare
- Visit one of the company's stores before the interview and note how the shelves are arranged and how staff greet customers.
- Think of a time you helped someone who was unhappy and be ready to explain what you said and how it ended.
- Learn a few of the store's main product lines so you can talk about them with some confidence.
- Prepare a short, honest answer about your availability for weekends, holidays and late shifts.
- Practise explaining how you would handle a customer asking for an item that is out of stock.
Common mistakes
- Saying you love people without giving a single example of serving a real customer.
- Treating questions about cash and stock lightly, when honesty is a big part of the job.
- Arriving late, which tells the interviewer you will also be late for an opening shift.
