About the role
A software engineering intern joins a development team for a few months to write code, fix bugs and learn how real software gets built. The interviewer is deciding whether you have solid programming fundamentals, solve problems step by step, learn quickly and can work with a team and accept feedback.
How to prepare
- Practise solving small coding problems and explaining your approach as you write.
- Review the basics of the language you know best, including data structures and common errors.
- Prepare to walk through one of your projects, the choices you made and a bug you fixed.
- Think about how you get unstuck when you cannot solve a problem on your own.
- Learn a little about the company's product and the tools its team uses.
Common mistakes
- Jumping into code without understanding the problem first.
- Listing many languages without being solid in any of them.
- Pretending to know something instead of explaining how you would find out.
