About the role
This interview tests whether you can design and conduct ethical qualitative research that produces defensible insight. The panel is interested in sampling choices, neutral interviewing, field judgement, systematic analysis and reporting that preserves nuance rather than selecting convenient quotes.
How to prepare
- Prepare a qualitative project and explain how the research question shaped your sampling and method choices.
- Practise neutral probes for vague, socially desirable or contradictory answers.
- Review consent, confidentiality, safeguarding and secure handling of field notes and transcripts.
- Choose an example of how you developed, tested and revised a coding framework.
- Be ready to explain how negative cases or minority views changed your interpretation.
Common mistakes
- Choosing participants by convenience without discussing whose views may be missing.
- Leading participants towards expected answers or treating a focus group like a survey.
- Presenting memorable quotations as if they establish how common a view is.
- Describing themes without showing how coding, comparison and contradictory evidence supported them.
