About the role
This interview tests whether you can run safe, efficient port calls while protecting the interests of shipowners, charterers and operators. The panel will look for strong control of clearances, vendors, disbursements and changing vessel schedules. They also want evidence that you can lead an agency team and communicate calmly across many parties.
How to prepare
- Map the activities and decision points in a port call from appointment to final disbursement account.
- Prepare an example of recovering a vessel call after an arrival, berth or service plan changed.
- Review how you check clearance documents, vendor invoices and supporting records.
- Think through how you allocate work and maintain cover during simultaneous port calls.
- Prepare to explain how you keep principals informed without sending unverified updates.
Common mistakes
- Treating a port call as a checklist without showing how you manage changes and dependencies.
- Accepting vendor charges without checking authority, evidence and agreed rates.
- Sending frequent updates that do not state the operational effect or required decision.
- Blaming authorities, terminals or the vessel instead of explaining how you would resolve the issue.
