About the role
This interview tests how you turn shipping market opportunities into fixtures that are commercially sound and operationally workable. The panel will probe your voyage calculations, negotiation choices, contract awareness and control after the fixture. They want clear reasoning about downside risk, not only stories about winning attractive rates.
How to prepare
- Practise comparing voyage opportunities using freight, fuel, port, time and repositioning assumptions.
- Review charter terms that commonly affect laytime, cancellation, performance and claims exposure.
- Prepare an example of a negotiation where you protected value without damaging the relationship.
- Think through a demurrage or performance dispute from records and notices to commercial resolution.
- Prepare to explain how you work with brokers, operations, legal and finance during a live fixture.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the highest headline freight without testing time, fuel and positioning assumptions.
- Treating charter clauses as legal detail rather than commercial risk.
- Describing negotiation tactics without stating your walk-away position or approval limits.
- Letting weak notices or inconsistent records undermine a post-fixture claim.
