About the role

A chartering assistant supports the search, negotiation and follow-up needed to match cargoes with suitable vessels. The panel is looking for accurate commercial thinking, a basic grasp of chartering terms and the discipline to record fast-moving negotiations without changing their meaning.

How to prepare

  1. Revise the basic differences between voyage and time charters and the information contained in a cargo order or vessel position.
  2. Practise comparing two voyage options in a spreadsheet using clearly labelled assumptions.
  3. Review common concepts such as freight, laytime, demurrage, vessel position and subjects.
  4. Prepare an example of handling detailed commercial information against a short deadline.
  5. Follow current dry bulk, tanker or liner market commentary relevant to the employer's work.

Common mistakes

  • Comparing freight rates without considering vessel position, time and voyage costs.
  • Paraphrasing an offer in a way that changes a commercial term.
  • Using chartering vocabulary without being able to explain it in plain language.
